Twitter no longer requires users to log in to view tweets

After a few days of Twitter disabling tweets for logged-out users, it appears that this feature is now functioning again. ReturnByte editors have reported being able to view individual tweets without being logged into their accounts. However, profiles are still not accessible for those who are not signed in. Although user bios can be seen, their tweet feeds remain unavailable. Additionally, tweet previews in iMessage have started working for certain users once more.

According to Twitter owner Elon Musk, blocking tweets from logged out users was a “temporary emergency measure”. “We were robbed of so much data that it was degrading service to regular users,” he wrote.

The company gave a similar explanation for why it temporarily imposed limits on the number of tweets each user can read per day. On Tuesday, it said it was making the move, which shut down several Twitter apps, to “detect and eliminate bots and other bad actors harming the platform,” such as those that scrape data to train AI models. Twitter added that a small percentage of users were affected by the speed restrictions at the time.

Twitter no longer has a communications department that can be contacted for comments. Still, public tweets are back for everyone to see as Meta launches its Twitter competitor, called Threads. The service is expected to be available in several markets on Thursday, but not in the European Union.
